Change Log

A history of changes made to the game system.

Version 1.5.3 (December 1st, 2023)

  • Printable and Fillable PDF Character Sheets: The layout and design of the printable character sheets have been updated and PDF Form Fillable sheets are now included.

Version 1.5.2 (November 28th, 2023)

  • Lite Characters: The Move optional rule has been renamed to Lite Characters to make it easier to identify the purpose of the optional rule. Lite Characters are now defined by a set of capabilities rather than moves. Capabilities are a more appropriate label for what they represent and how they are defined for lite characters and equipment. The character sheet templates on Let's Role and Role VTT platforms have also been updated.

Version 1.5.1 (November 27th, 2023)

  • Random Tables: Added a collection of random tables to the Toolkit section.

Version 1.5.0 (October 30th, 2023)

  • Shifting the Odds: This dice mechanic option previously added under Toolkits has been removed. Based on additional dice probability analysis, the core game rules have been updated to favor the use of dice pools to adjust odds for ability and difficulty related to advantage and disadvantage rules, boosts, and teamwork.

  • Equipment: A new guide for how to define equipment has been added under Guides in the Toolkit section.

  • Standard Turn: A hint has been added to the Standard Turn game option related to supporting distance and range related to movement or ranged abilities.

  • Character Sheets: The character sheet on Let's Role has been updated to support a new custom Action dice roller using the new rules related to dice pools.

  • Level of Effect: The action roll result range values for determining the level of effect were modified, changing the shift value for a critical effect from 8 to 7. The dice roller on Let's Role was modified for the updated rules.

  • AnyDice Resource: A resource page was added for AnyDice to provide guidance on dice probability analysis for the game system dice mechanics.

Version 1.4.0 (October 13th, 2023)

  • Toolkit: The Options and Extras page has been replaced with a new Toolkit group with separate pages and sub-pages for game Options, Extras, Guides, and Modules. Each toolkit page now includes a table of contents with a summary for each sub-page to make finding toolkit-related information easier.

  • Toolkit Guides: Guides have been added to the new Toolkit group to describe strategies for how to extend the game system with additional rulesets.

  • Gear Slots and Encumbrance: Character limits related to gear slots and encumbrance have been removed from the core rules and replaced with a toolkit guide for adding encumbrance rules as an optional ruleset.

  • Moves: Moves has been added as a game option that offers an alternative method for defining character abilities and replaces/consolidates skills, boosts, and gear into a single character element. Moves are the preferred way for directors to define non-player characters like adversaries and equipment. Moves can also be used for a simpler player character option for quick starts, one-shots, expos, campaigns for kids, or normal campaigns where players may prefer a lighter action-oriented character. A new "Lite" character sheet has been added for players and directors to create characters using signature moves.

  • Health Sub-pages: The health elements of stress, grit, and conditions have been split into their own sub-pages to provide visual identification in the table of contents to these important elements, and to provide room to improve descriptions and add examples and sample play snippets.

  • Shifting the Odds: The Shifting the Odds mechanic has been redefined to make it a flexible and modular rule option that can be customized to provide multiple ways to adjust the ability of a character or the difficulty of a challenge. In addition to stepping up or down the dice, this now introduces the ability to support +/- modifiers or other alternative dice mechanics that can be considered to help scale actions during encounters.

  • Character Sheets: Printable and online character sheets have been updated to add support a new Lite Character Sheets for characters and equipment using the new Moves character and equipment option. Group sheets have been removed in favor of using standard notes, index cards, or journals for tracking group inventory and resources for groups.

  • Specializations Clarification: Specializations are now clearly defined as an upgrade to a skill. This change was made to remove confusion related to any conceptual difference between a skill and a specialization.

Version 1.3.1 (October 9th, 2023)

  • Maximum Stress: The rules related to the starting maximum stress and additional maximum stress earned during character advancement have been simplified. Maximum stress is no longer calculated based on skill sets and skill set improvement. Starting maximum stress is now a fixed value determined by a character's starting tier during character creation (determined by the director or group preference), and characters can increase their maximum stress by 1 point during character advancement for a major milestone.

Version 1.3.0 (September 29th, 2023)

  • Character Sub-Pages: The character page was split into sub-pages to allow more detailed explanations and examples for each element.

  • Revised Skills: The rules regarding skills have been revised. Each starting skill set now gets a fixed number of skills, with additional skills being added as part of skill progression. Rules related to Character Creation and Character Advancement have been updated.

  • Revised Boosts: The rules regarding boosts have been revised based on playtest feedback to make creating boosts simpler, ensure better balance between characters, and provide increased versatility related to combining different kinds of boosts. Rules related to boosts such as the number of boosts for Character Creation tiers, and invoking boosts as part of the Standard Turn have also been updated.

  • Starting Gear Slots: The default number of starting gear slots has been revised from 4 down to 2 floating slots, with rules for additional slots for each skill set remaining the same.

Version 1.2.0 (September 15th, 2023)

  • Scenes: Added a new section called Scenes to provide more detail on how to run scenes using rounds and turns.

  • Standard Turn: The modular "Standard Action" rule was renamed to "Standard Turn" and updated to reflect the activities allowed on a turn rather than an action. The rule is now referenced from the Scenes section rather than the Actions section.

  • Actions: The Actions section was updated to remove details related to Scenes, Rounds, and Turns to focus only on the steps related to performing an action.

Version 1.1.0 (September 6th, 2023)

  • Occupations renamed Skill Sets: Based on player feedback, occupations were confusing and have been renamed Skill Sets. All references to occupations in the game rules and character sheets have been replaced by skill sets.

  • Skills Field Added: Skills has been added as an additional field related to Skill Sets on character sheets. The documentation for Skill Sets has been updated to require a player to identify 3 to 5 core skills for each character skill set. Character sheets for print and online platforms have been updated to include a skills field for skill set blocks.

  • Boosts Update: Boosts have been updated to clarify the difference between narrative and mechanical benefits that can be provided by boosts, and to define the specific mechanical benefits that can be provided by a boost.

  • Actions Update: Actions have been updated to include guidance on holding an action to wait for a specific event or circumstance during a round.
