Actions
Actions use dice to determine the outcome of a character's decisions when facing a challenge that is dangerous or has a risk of failure.
Any time the success of a player's intended action is not guaranteed, the game host can ask the player to perform an action roll. An action role compares a player's ability against the difficulty of the challenge and the character's fictional positioning within the scene.
Difficulty
The difficulty of a challenge is determined by the game host and is measured on a scale from 1 to 10. Players must beat the difficulty when rolling action dice to succeed.
The base difficulty is chosen relative to how difficult the challenge would be for someone who is just ordinary or average in the game world. The base difficulty will be the same for all players facing the same challenge. The game host can derive the base difficulty rating using a challenge rating between D4 and D12. The base difficulty is determined by multiplying the challenge rating dice size.
Challenge Rating | Base Difficulty | Description |
---|---|---|
XX | 1 | Easy |
D4 | 2 | Challenging |
D6 | 3 | Very Challenging |
D8 | 4 | Hard |
D10 | 5 | Very Hard |
D12 | 6 | Extremely Hard |
++ | 7-10 | Almost Impossible |
After determining the base difficulty, the host is responsible for considering a character's fictional positioning. Fictional positioning refers to the specific circumstances, context, and narrative elements surrounding a character's actions. Their position is used to personalize the base difficulty of a challenge to an individual character.
For example, A player attempting to make a ranged attack at an adversary obscured by smoke makes the challenge more difficult. The host should also consider how a character's current conditions may impact their ability to overcome the challenge. Players are responsible for advising the host of any relevant conditions that may hinder their character.
INCAPACITATED
If a severe condition (a level of 3) impacts a player's action, the character is considered incapacitated until the condition is treated. The player can still consider alternative types of actions that are not impacted by their character's condition.
The host must mentally weigh the cumulative impact of a character's positive and negative circumstances and conditions to determine if a player has an overall advantage or disadvantage. If the player has an advantage, the base difficulty of the challenge is decreased by 1. If the player has a disadvantage, the difficulty of the challenge is increased by 1.
Ability
A character's ability is determined by assembling a dice pool of up to 3 relevant assets that can help them succeed. A player must always roll three dice. If the character lacks relevant assets, a D4 is rolled in place of a specific asset.
Players can also invoke one or more applicable features to boost their character's ability. Players must ensure that any feature used satisfies the constraints imposed by the features limit and advise the host of any effects that impact their action.
CHALLENGING PLAYERS
There will be situations during gameplay where characters may lack suitable assets or features to overcome a challenge, and failure is inevitable. Hosts should not avoid challenging players by setting a high difficulty when appropriate. Players should consider improving this chance of Success by changing their strategy, gaining a better position, and using teamwork.
Outcome
Once the challenge difficulty and character ability have been determined, the player rolls their action dice. For each die in the action pool, if the result beats the difficulty, it is a success. Otherwise, it is a failure. The combination of Success and Failure determines the overall outcome of the action.
OUTCOME | SUCCESS | FAILURE |
---|---|---|
COMPLETE SUCCESS | 3 | 0 |
MOSTLY SUCCESS | 2 | 1 |
MOSTLY FAILURE | 1 | 2 |
COMPLETE FAILURE | 0 | 3 |
BINARY OUTCOMES
If the action roll is a simple test for Success or Failure, the player succeeds if the outcome is either Mostly Success or Complete Success. Otherwise, it is a Failure.
