Characters

Characters are the primary participants in the game's narrative. Players create characters which serve as their avatars in the game world.

Characters may be people, spirits or other supernatural entities, beasts and monsters, vehicles or industrial equipment, or advanced computer systems.

Players are responsible for creating the characters that will act as their persona in the game world. The host is responsible for creating non-player characters to fill the game world with the people and things that players interact with during gameplay.

CHARACTER SHEETS

There are a variety of tools you can use to create characters. You can use software to create your character digitally, use index cards, or you can use our printable character sheets.

Character Elements

The same character elements are used for modeling player and non-player characters, so the process of creating characters is the same for both players and the host.

Characters are defined by 4 core elements.

ASSETS: Assets are the significant and distinctive elements (like traits, backgrounds and gear) that character's leverage to perform actions. Assets are assigned a dice rating from D4 to D12 to represent their respective quality and utility. During game play, players can choose up to 3 relevant assets for their characters to help them succeed when performing actions.

FEATURES: Features are characteristics or capabilities that make characters special and unique. They are used to express aspects of a character that are uncommon and extraordinary. This can include special talents, powers, magic, cybernetic augmentations, or enhanced technology. Relevant features can be invoked when performing actions but always come with a cost.

RESOURCES: Resources measure and track a character's consumables. Resources are used for tracking intangible resources like experience points or wildcards, or tangible resources like currency, provisions or materials.

CONDITIONS: Conditions are the dynamic and diverse set of boons and banes that represent the health and status of a character. Conditions can impact a character's identity, performance, control and support. Conditions identify advantages and disadvantages when characters perform actions.

CHARACTER EXAMPLES

For inspiration creating characters, you can find examples under Archetypes in the Toolkit section.

Point Buy Creation

Characters are built using a point-buy system. Players are awarded a starting number of points to create new characters at the beginning of a campaign. The following table defines the point costs upgrading character assets and adding features.

EXPERIENCE POINTS (XP)

The host (depending on the type of campaign) may grant additional points as rewards for experience earned during game play. Players can spend experience points during downtime to further improve their characters.

Power Tiers

The number of points awarded to players for character creation will determine their overall starting power tier. Power tiers are a way of measuring the relative ability level of a character to common or average within the game world. The host should select a starting amount to fit the story and setting. Below are some suggested standard character tiers you can use as a reference.
