Dangerous Encounters

A modular rule to adjust the standard dice mechanic to increase the difficulty of challenges and make the world feel more dangerous.

Dangerous Encounters is a way to tweak the dice probability to make things more challenging for players, and dangerous for characters. These strategies can be used for an entire campaign, particular environments within the setting, entire scenes or specific scenarios.

Flip the Bit

The standard dice mechanic in the game uses opposing rolls that compare a character's ability against the difficulty of a challenge. A tie favors the character. When the result of an action roll is a 0, it indicates success for the character.

For most groups, this is a good default, slightly adjusting the odds to make player character's feel more competent and capable. When the director or the group want to make things feel more dangerous for characters, "Flip the Bit" making ties favor failure instead of success.
